The Panhandle Pathway is the name for the section of the former Pennsylvania Railroad line from Winamac to Logansport. The land is now held in trust by the Indiana Trails Fund, Inc. Friends of the Panhandle Pathway, Inc is a local group of volunteers dedicated to turning this land into a hiking/biking trail for all to enjoy.
Beginning in Winamac the trail continues over the Tippecanoe River, Mill Creek, through Star City, Thornhope, and ends at Kenneth west of Logansport. Conversion to a hiking/biking trail begins in 2006, and will be done in phases.
Phase 1. Tippecanoe River to Star City, 4.0 miles.
Ø Grade and develop the trail surface. Ø Upgrade the bridge across Mill Creek for pedestrian use. Ø Coordinate efforts with Star City sanitation project.
Phase 2. Tippecanoe River Bridge to trail’s end, north (Galbreath, Inc. area), 1.5 miles.
Ø Grade and develop the trail surface. Ø Upgrade the bridge across the Tippecanoe River for pedestrian use.
Phase 3. Star City to Royal Center, 8.5 miles.
Ø Grade and develop the trail surface.
Phase 4. Royal Center to Kenneth, 6.0 miles.
Ø Grade and develop the trail surface.
The Friends of the Panhandle Pathway encourage and invite new volunteers. Hikers, bikers, naturalists, and “enjoyers of the out-of-doors” are invited to the monthly meetings held the Wednesday of the last full week of each month.
